Transitional Kitchen Remodel in Chevy Chase, MD

The homeowners bought this Chevy Chase with a newly renovated kitchen, but the cabinets were already in disrepair. In addition, the ultra-contemporary design did not fit the family or the home’s style.
The couple determined they wanted to move the existing laundry room upstairs, which freed the room to be used as part of the kitchen space. It also allowed the kitchen to open up further to the living space. We expanded window previously part of the laundry room, added an additional sky light and closed a window along what is now the cooking wall in order to create a balanced layout for the family.
The home includes traditional features such as arched openings, heavy crown molding and wall paneling. The couple wanted to give a nod to all of these details in the kitchen, but also create a bridge to their more streamlined style. A typically traditional mahogany wood is used but with more structured lines and a band of stainless steel in the hood. This same mahogany wood was used on the island with an inlayed stainless framing bead on the doors facing the living room and a stainless steel toe kick. The mahogany pairs elegantly with bright white cabinetry and a slab marble backsplash that has hints of blue.
The corridor between the kitchen and dining room transformed into a walk-in pantry hidden behind cabinet doors as well as a dry bar for when the family entertains.
