Alexandria, VA
This transitional kitchen in Alexandria, Virginia, was thoughtfully reimagined in collaboration with Thorsen Construction. The original layout was challenging, with an awkward garage entrance positioned in the center of the kitchen, effectively splitting the space in two—one side for the table area and the other for the working kitchen. Additionally, the connection to the adjacent family room was weak, leaving the workspace isolated with no clear sightlines.
Our redesign took a holistic approach. We began by relocating the garage doorway and creating a mini-mudroom with shelving and storage to help manage clutter as people enter the home. With the doorway no longer dividing the kitchen, we were able to design an expansive countertop run, featuring a stunning zinc hood and a blue range perfectly centered for an ideal work zone.
On the opposite wall, we replaced the existing windows with shorter ones to position the sink beneath them, providing a view of the backyard. Although the soffit above the sink couldn’t be removed, we turned it into a design feature. By paneling the soffit and framing the area with integrated refrigerator/freezer on the left and an open cabinet and deep appliance garage on the right, we created a charming window niche. Sconces on either side of the niche added the finishing touch.
