Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath, designed this stunning, contemporary kitchen. A beautiful example of contrasting colors and materials, Paul had a vision for this space as soon as he stepped into it.

On his very first visit to the house, Paul knew a re-designed kitchen had to follow the length and linear feel of the room. The existing layout, a standard u-shape with a breakfast bar, left a lot of unusable space in the center of the room, had a distinct lack of storage and even less personality. The new homeowners were looking for a space that not only reflected their style and taste but also had a clean-line, modern feel with some European flair.

In order to accommodate an open and fresh design, a total renovation was required. Paul designed a 13’ center island, which was quickly designated the focal point of the new space. Cooking was included at one end of the island, while a seating area was incorporated into the other end. Mathematically calculated, the waterfall-top wraps one end of the island while finishing in a perfectly balanced overhang on the opposite side. With no support required, the cantilevered top comfortably provides dining space for five!

Once the four-inch Peruvian walnut top was selected for the island, the search for matching veneer for the perimeter cabinetry was on! The veneer had to be equally as stunning as the island top while complementing the high-gloss, white polyester wall and island base cabinets. With the cabinet manufacturer’s help, Paul embarked on an eight month search for the perfect veneer and finally settled on the Peruvian walnut log. A finished sample “sealed the deal” when Paul saw how the natural color and broad grain of this particular veneer was enhanced by a 50-sheen, poly clear-coat. The search was over!

Two door styles, Classic III and Nouveau, were chosen to best accommodate each material type. Horizontal hardware placement for the base and mid-high cabinets was carefully specified ensuring a continuous line around the kitchen perimeter. Statuary Marble, with its color palette of grays and whites, was selected for countertops and backsplash. Industrial-gray floor tile brought all the colors of the kitchen and adjacent room together.

Additional design details included integrated Miele appliances along with wine coolers that house the client’s collection of wines. A perfectly positioned stainless steel hood and sculptural hanging lights add the final touches. Paul said, “Although this project took longer than most, the end result was a fresh, contemporary kitchen which the homeowners love. They feel it was worth the wait.” Great job, Paul! We couldn’t agree more!
