Big design doesn’t always have to come with a big budget to match.

This home presented the clients with an opportunity to make some radical changes.  Removing the dividing walls that separated their original, tiny kitchen from the family den brought in lots of natural light, and enabled us to create a larger and more functional workspace for cooking and interacting.  With young kids, the clients needed to be able to have many types of family activities combined into one open, inviting space.  

The cabinetry design features three different finishes –white and grey painted pieces, and stained cherry accents.  The cabinetry is frameless for full access and increased storage, and the floating shelves offer not only function but also a strong graphic element to the design.  As the cabinetry is a major component of any kitchen budget, we chose a factory that builds conservatively priced cabinetry, so that we could also include a few statement pieces that really “make” this design.  The backsplash is one of these.  Sculptured limestone tiles provide an extraordinary texture and depth, and compliment the simplicity of the quartz countertops so well.  The wenge wood eating bar set into the island countertop adds comfort while eating and also brings interesting contrast and balance to the design.  The final touch is a pair of pendant lights with personality – an easy way to bring low-commitment character to any space.

With imagination and savvy strategy, these clients transformed their home (and their home life)… and stayed right on budget.
