This Tudor style house was in dire need of an addition.  The architect that the homeowner hired designed a beautiful space on the back of the house which included ample room for a new kitchen.  The design that had been included on the plan was all wrong.  The new cathedral ceiling peak, emphasized by beams, was not taken into account at all.  The back wall (where the hood is now) was jammed up with a double oven and a refrigerator, neither of which are very appealing to look at, especially on a focal wall.

I recommended that the client separate the refrigerator and freezer.  This way, a 30” wide all refrigerator would fit comfortably to the right of the window.  We were lucky that there was still enough room for the dishwasher and sink on this wall, and, this simply required moving the window over slightly to the right.  Now that the sink and refrigerator had been placed, all we needed to focus on was the range, hood and freezer drawers.  The back focal wall was now available to center the range and hood on the peak of the ceiling.  Both the architect and the homeowners saw, both on paper and after the project was completed, how important this was.  The island is also centered on the peak which then allowed the chandelier and breakfast table to be centered as well, which emphasized the excellent architectural design.  This kind of centering on a visible axis is what makes a kitchen feel great when a person is standing in it.
