JGKB designed the client’s first kitchen in the same home 25 years prior so it was natural that they contacted us to design their second kitchen. It was surreal seeing the material selection and cabinetry design for the smaller original space. With their kids grow, the clients decided the way they used the house had changed. They wanted an open concept, space to entertain up to 40 people comfortably while cooking and have vantage views of everything while doing it. The client is also a local interior designer so the project was a labor of love for her.
Design challenges were making a long space feel purposeful. We decided to color block in order to delineate tall storage and appliances with open base and wall cabinets. A Best Ceiling exhaust fan was used to play up the differences in scale between the tall storage on the right and the open countertop space on the left. This allowed us to not have to work around a wall hung hood. Two islands were used for function. The clients could then separate guests into zones while being able to interact with their friends.
Heavy duty countertop support was designed and anchored to the floor joists in the basement ceiling to create the large cantilever countertop overhand on the seating area and allow for more open floor space in a narrow kitchen. Retractable doors were used to allow for a baking center while not being encumbered by swinging doors. Servo –drive electrical hinges were used so the client wouldn’t need to worry about reaching the wall doors once they were open, they flip up and easily return to the closed position with the touch of a button. The trash cabinet is also accessible with an easy bump of the hand.
The cabinets are mdf painted slab and architectural veneered wood. The countertops are a mix of Quartz on the perimeter and “Sequoia Grey” Quartzite on islands.
