Kitchen

This kitchen won Honorable Mention--Large Kitchen in the NKBA Baltimore/Washington Chapter Design Contest in March 2016. Taking over the former dining room space, this kitchen doubled in size. The homeowners longed for a large, contemporary space that would reflect their modern aesthetic and allow the wife, an avid baker and hostess, to exercise her culinary skills. An island with lots of prep space was mandatory. Lots of attention was paid to making the space appear larger and wider. Reflections play a large role in expanding this space. The range hood is mirrored stainless and the raised part of the island countertop has a support wrapped in mirrored glass. The reflections create the illusion that the island is “floating” in the room. Incorporating the small dining room into the kitchen footprint gave us more floor space but it was still tight with the 33” wide island. On the back wall we faced the appliances and floor-to-ceiling storage with vertical grain, high gloss cabinetry to give height and depth to that elevation. The dual level island has the auxiliary sink and storage beneath a Calcatta Nuvo quartz top that is grain matched and mitered to form waterfalls on both ends. Structural issues prevented us from opening up the kitchen completely and determined parts of the layout. We placed the 4 ovens on this short wall and put lift-up doors above them to allow for easy access. Horizontal cabinet doors fold up towards the ceiling to reveal easy-to-reach storage. A Le Mans pullout storage unit in the corner allows full access to what would have been a blind corner. A folding door above slides open to reveal baking supplies and small appliances.
