Kitchen

The clients purchased a turn of the century row house in Georgetown that understandably required extensive remodeling. The objective was to not only update the finishes and bring the cabinets into the twenty first century but to increase the flow between the outdoor patio and art studio to the living space in the front.

The existing kitchen included the original outdoor alley that used to go from the front to the backyard and a brick pizza oven whose chimney extended to the roof. With all these structural impediments in place, this space needed careful space planning. The clients were downsizing from a large gourmet suburban kitchen to a smaller foot print but did not want to compromise on storage. Careful consideration was given to cabinet inserts. We incorporated tray bases, drawer dividers, spice and cutlery inserts and cabinets that go as close to the ceiling as functional. Every cabinet had a function but the flexibility to be interchanged.

We increased the countertop space on both sides of the sink by moving the cooktop to the island. Also, by adding stainless steel doors to the cabinets above the fridge column and oven column we created additional visual height and balance. This helps anchor the space between, allowing for floating shelves to display their international collection of accessories.

The clients, who met in Rome and travel extensively, collect vintage paper and are fascinated by its intricate patterns. The floating shelves gave us an opportunity to highlight the beautiful handmade tile backsplash the client selected that is reminiscent to the patterns they love in their paper collection.
