In addition to being dark, tired and dated, serious architectural issues hindered the flow in this 80’s era kitchen. Barnes Vanze Architects added a wide bank of windows overlooking the backyard, distanced the two doorways to create a balanced countertop area for the cooktop and rangehood, and fixed the breakfast area’s tight space to include a good-sized banquette. Once the room’s structure was remedied, Jennifer Gilmer designed a new layout that afforded enough room for an oversized island with a pair of sinks. She grouped the integrated refrigerator/freezer and pantry all along one wall and clad them in stainless steel for a sleek appearance. Updating dark, tired spaces into the open, entertaining areas today’s families demand sometimes requires a team of professionals working collaboratively. Barnes Vanze Architects added windows to improve the natural light, distanced two doorways and fixed the breakfast area’s tight space. Once the room was restructured, Jennifer designed a space with a large island and an ample banquette. Grouping the integrated stainless steel appliances along one wall created a focal point.
