Our clients embarked on a whole house renovation to create a calm and sophisticated retreat nestled in the woods,
with lake views, for their family. They wanted a modern, functional and beautiful new kitchen for this mid-century
home.
The cabinets have slate tile blue slab front painted bases with routed edge pulls and walnut interiors. The upper
cabinets feature metal frames with back-painted glass Opal Matte inserts and side panels, walnut interiors, and
integrated lighting. Storage was maximized by adding Lemans corner swing-out shelves, removable drawer dividers,
tray dividers, and spice and cutlery inserts.
The kitchen counters are made from honed basalt and feature a wenge topped knife block that is cut
into the counter. This clever solution keeps knives safe and in easy reach of the sink and cooktop.
The custom hood and floating 2” thick shelves with integrated LED lighting are clad in Brushed Alumasteel. The
hood is angled at the top to follow the lines of new wood-clad ceiling and features a reveal detail where they meet.
Quarter figured Euro white ash with a natural oak stain is used for the refrigerator column, wall panels, and the
beverage center cabinets and complements the new wood ceiling. An electronic lift-up door above the refrigerator
reveals a storage cabinet. This continues the horizontal design of the kerfed wood panels up to the ceiling where
they wrap to become wall panels.
The island “table” is constructed of 2” steel tubing with four splayed legs that conceal electrical wires coming from the
floor. A two drawer base on one side of the island has 2” x 2” cut outs as finger pulls. This drawer base is finished
on all four sides in quartered figured ash and abuts the slate blue cabinetry to create a gorgeous signature piece. A
large display shelf and pull down storage cabinet face the living room, and storage drawers and a speed oven face
the working/kitchen side of the island.
The beverage center features an integral sink and a copper countertop with a unique edge design of varying
thicknesses. The counter extends under a tall cabinet made of the Euro ash with bi-fold doors that open to a lit
interior housing a collection of bar ware.
