Modern Bath in Potomac, MD

Designed by Jennifer Gilmer

This master bath had been remodeled in the 80’s. The room was a combination of marble and mirrors. A jacuzzi tub was set into a step up marble platform that used 1/3rd of the room. As a result, this nice sized bathroom seemed much smaller than its 200 plus square feet of space. If it hadn’t been for the plethora of mirrors, it would have felt even smaller. Even though the cabinets were mirrored and the tile/counters were a medium white/gray marble tile, the space was dark and cluttered. The one window in the room was cramped by the tub deck and lost its sparkle by being overtaken by the clutter. The shower and toilet room were on an angle which ate up a lot of the available space.

The goal was to create a space that was functional, felt spacious and peaceful, and incorporated color and texture. We took down the angled walls and discovered more space that was unused. By taking out the tub deck, tearing down walls to square off the room and utilizing lost space it seemed like the bathroom grew in size exponentially. We disguised the only angled wall that was left by enclosing it in the toilet room. We switched the toilet room and shower, which allowed for a larger curbless shower, and then created symmetry by using the same sized glass doors on both – making the toilet room door frosted.

A free standing tub was centered under the window and existing skylights, as well as centered which created a beautiful focal point while taking up much less space. “Constellation” blue floating cabinets mirror each other separating his from her vanities. We matched blue glass tiles to the vanity color and used them in the shower and behind the bathtub. There are two storage areas at the ends of each vanity, both appear to be mirrored columns which helped them to disappear while adding light and sparkle to the space and providing full length mirrors. One of these is a small walk in linen closet the other a storage cabinet.

Large 48 x 48” porcelain tiles were used on the floor as well as walls and the counters were also made from large format porcelain that blends nicely with the tile. The porcelain on the counters wrap around the vanities. For texture and interest, we added white embossed tiles on the two opposing walls from shower to tub. The combination of white and blue, mirrors and natural light make for a bright, tranquil, beautiful room.
