The space for this kitchen had been expanded prior to this renovation. Although it was a large space, it was very poorly arranged for maximum function. There was a very, very large island which blocked access to the appliances and storage. The cabinets were outdated and not on par with the quality of the rest of the house. The cabinets were white laminate, and, the hinges on the doors were beginning to fail.
The client wanted their dream kitchen and searched high and low for a cabinet style that appealed to them. They saw a small display that I had designed for the Sub Zero/Wolf distributor, which was the Biedermeier style, and, fell in love with it. Since I carry the only cabinet line that can produce this style of cabinet, they ended up walking onto my showroom.
I showed them how the kitchen is very balanced, with the four windows at one end, a cathedral ceiling which peaked directly in the center, and, with the dining room door at the opposite end of the window wall which was centered on both. Their original kitchen did not take this into consideration at all because the extra large L shaped island was just placed where it fit.
After pointing out the center axis of the room, I showed them how one large island had proven to be more of a hindrance than a help. I suggested that, since the room was large enough, that they should consider two islands. This way, they could easily move from one side of the kitchen to the other, utilizing both sides and the appliances that we would place there. This also allowed the clients to have the countertop space that they needed for buffet style dinners to enjoy with their large and expanding family. From a design standpoint, this idea also honored the center axis and emphasized balance in the room.
Although they required a large amount of appliances, because of the tall storage around the dining room, they have plenty of storage as well. They also required a large table, and we were able to design a very long, oval Biedermeier table that seats eight and lives in front of the four windows. This table had not been delivered yet when we took pictures of their kitchen, but, we have included pictures from the cabinet manufacturer that they took prior to delivering it.
