We needed a bold statement and spectacular products to create a masterpiece out of this small, windowless room. Playing up the contrast between contemporary and traditional led us to choose a minimal cabinetry and traditional fixtures.

Guests to this lovely home in Potomac were accosted by cabbage rose wallpaper and 80’s décor in this first floor powder room. Relentlessly traditional, the bathroom had a dome ceiling with a faux plaster medallion, a crystal chandelier and a furniture-style wood vanity with elaborate carved details. The homeowners wanted the renovation to create a sense of wonder and delight with traditional bones but exquisite highlights.

The design kicked off with the selection of the unique handmade bronze vessel sink. Taking our lead from the sink’s golden tones and rustic texture, the granite countertop was given a sensual leathered finish. Since this is a powder room, not much storage was required. A pair of deep drawers flank the false drawer at the center, creating what is essentially a wall hung vanity. There is just enough storage to discourage clutter on the counter top and even a couple of extra rolls of toilet paper.

The drawer faces have exquisite quartered mahogany veneer with bookmatched Imbuya Burl inlayed in to the center panels, mimicking a piece of antique furniture. The slim mirror is framed in a mahogany band that continues down to the countertop. A matching piece of mahogany is behind the sink to serve as a backsplash and a perfect place to mount the classical weathered brass faucet with cross handles.

Establishing a transitional style that blended the colonial details of the home with a few more contemporary details brought the room into the 21st Century. Juxtaposing the geometrical look of the sconces and overhead light fixture with the domed ceiling and circular sink gives the room a calm serene feeing.
