Our client decided that a small city row house was the next perfect step in her lifestyle. The kitchen is located in the front of the house and has charming views of street life through the prominent window. The kitchen was dated with melamine cabinets and freestanding appliances. The cabinets didn’t provide adequate storage space. We took the kitchen to the studs, added in vintage heart of pine floors that ran through the rest of the house. We re-oriented the kitchen completely by changing the fridge location from one side of the wall to the other. The stove moved as well. This created a much more open working space and a less claustrophobic space. Countertop space was increased and a larger fridge was installed. We added hidden tall storage for pantry space with flat panel doors to create more of a “wall finish”. This helped hide this cabinetry and didn’t draw additional attention to the tall storage. The eye can then move to the front of the kitchen which makes space feel more expansive. We installed textured laminate cabinets in a light and beachy feel with white macabus quartzite countertops and Ming green thin mosaic in the same hue. This creates a soothing tonal look which helps make a very small space feel larger as nothing really pops to the eye individually. We added a small, thin stainless shelf over the range for some spice storage and easy access. A shallow range vent was installed to streamline the wall cabinets into the same elevation.
