Elegant Family Kitchen in Arlington, Virginia

August 13, 2019

Since 1997, Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath has been the premier kitchen and bath remodeler in the DMV area, delivering beautiful and functional custom spaces. One of our most remarkable projects, completed by designer Meghan Browne in 2019, is a stunning kitchen transformation in Arlington, VA.

Originally designed in 2012, this traditional kitchen had become tired, dated, and no longer aligned with the vibrant, energetic family that owns the home today. Browne quickly recognized this, stating, “I set out to create a vibrant space where every cabinet was planned to a T.”

A Thoughtful Redesign

The existing layout generally worked for the family, but with a few thoughtful changes and meticulous planning of each cabinet, the new design brought a fresh look and heightened functionality to the space. One of the key updates was relocating the range top to the back wall and expanding the island to better fit the room’s size and proportions. This adjustment created ample room for meal prep, cookie making, and serving, all while enhancing the flow of the kitchen.

Purpose-Driven Stations

To maximize functionality, the kitchen was divided into dedicated stations:

  • Entertaining Station: This area features bi-fold retractable doors, offering a sleek, clutter-free appearance when guests gather to refill their drinks. The streamlined design keeps the kitchen tidy without sacrificing elegance.
  • Prep Station: Located along the back wall and island, this station includes an appliance garage for easy access to a toaster oven, as well as refrigerator and freezer drawers for quick retrieval of fresh or frozen ingredients. The setup ensures meal prep is fast and efficient.
  • Cooking Station: Designed for serious home cooks, this station features a custom hood with a 1200 CFM blower and a high-BTU Wolf Rangetop. With professional-level cooking capabilities, this station ensures every dish is prepared to perfection.

Blending Function and Style

To create a clear separation between the kitchen and the adjacent eat-in area, a new wall was added. This division allowed for the addition of custom cabinetry specifically designed for homework and charging electronics. To differentiate this area from the rest of the kitchen, the cabinets were given mirrored fronts, increased to a height of 60 inches, and accented with picture lights and artwork. This combination transformed the functional kitchen space into a decorative, transitional area leading to the dining nook.

Elegant Touches for a Modern Aesthetic

Browne’s design also incorporated elegant, modern touches that aligned with the homeowners’ style. The island received a fun pop of blue, adding a splash of personality, while a sculptural granite waterfall countertop served as the focal point for the seating area.

To complete the sophisticated look, the backsplash was designed with Neolith porcelain tile featuring striking Calacatta veining. The horizontal wood grain of the laminate base cabinets and the tall cabinetry walls added warmth, bringing balance to the sleek, contemporary design.

This Arlington kitchen is a shining example of how thoughtful planning and design can create a vibrant, functional, and stylish space for any family.
