Charming Kitchen with a White Tile Backsplash

The owners asked us to reimagine their dated kitchen to replace dark cabinets, an awkward double-height angled island, and a peninsula that cut off the flow from the kitchen to the breakfast room. They wanted to incorporate a beautiful new range and a large island for gatherings with family and friends.
We started by adding new cased openings between the kitchen and breakfast room, and kitchen and living room. We also removed an existing pantry closet which projected into the useable kitchen footprint. This opened up the space and added much-needed definition between the rooms.
A new stunning blue Ilve range with brass accents was placed to create a focus on one wall. Above that, a custom hood in matching high-sheen paint features decorative brass edge molding. A large island was placed in the center and perpendicular to the range. The working sides of the island include a drawer microwave, large drawers, and cabinets. Two sides of the island provide space for comfortable seating. The charming island, also painted in “Ilve Blue” features turned furniture legs and panels to match the inset door style, and is topped by a gorgeous 2” thick seamless marble slab.
At the corner, a ribbon of three casement windows on the sink wall and two on the range wall provides a panoramic water view. We chose to center the sink on the first casement on the left to allow for unrestricted views while leaving ample counter space and room for the dishwasher and tray storage.
The perimeter wall includes creamy white stacked inset cabinets that extend to the ceiling. We chose full overlay base cabinets in the same color and door style. These maximize storage on the perimeter. An open cabinet above the refrigerator reduces the mass of this large appliance and is lit to allow for display. Two tall narrow pantry cabinets were added for storage. One is tucked under the stairs where the larger bulky pantry walls were removed.
The perimeter cabinets feature soapstone countertops and a lovely Moroccan-glazed white tile backsplash. Brass hardware is used throughout which adds a jewel-like effect to the white and blue cabinets. Walnut interiors are another highlight of these lovely cabinets.
An important feature of the new kitchen design was reorganizing the room to accommodate the angled walls. A coffered beamed ceiling that carries into the breakfast room unifies the two spaces. This creates symmetry which aids in locating light fixtures including two new beautiful brass pendants over the island.
