Silver Colored Open Concept Kitchen

The client’s home is situated on a large beautifully landscaped property in Oakton. Virginia. They completely remodeled their home to create an open floor plan for their 3 children and their large extended family. We designed three spaces, the kitchen, the basement bar and the family room built-ins. Our goal was to create modern yet warm spaces that were highly functional and comfortable.

For the kitchen, our first objective was to create a focal point that grounded the space. The custom metal hood and the 48” range is part of that focal wall. The use of 3 dimensional stone tile and a niche below the hood also adds texture and dimension to this area. We designed two islands. The first island has two dishwashers, several drawers for storage and an open lit section for cookbooks. The second island has a floating wenge wood countertop that can accommodate 5 people. While a slab door style was used to create clean lines throughout the design, we created warmth by pairing pained and wood melamine finishes together. Another important feature for our client was to have a separate coffee station and a place where their kids could sit when they came in from outside. We framed a designated space with tall cabinets and positioned base cabinets between the towers to great a coffee station. By incorporating lit shelves with metal brackets, we achieved an open feel to the space. A large window was also added to bring the outside in and a bench with storage was placed beneath it.

For the basement bar, we were working within a very large space. We angled the base cabinets and we used a dark paint to create interest in this area. The strategic use of lighting was a very important element with this layout. By incorporating lighting below the countertop and the toe kicks, it further enhanced the tone of the bar. We also designed a backdrop for the bar on the wall behind it. We recessed a large section of the wall to create a nook and staggered floating shelves within it. We chose to use a textured wall paper and to suspend the shelves with metal cables to achieve a modern feel to the space.
